I was hoping to have my first group of fifth graders write today's blog entry, but we ran out of time and energy at the end of the day. With that said, I hope to have the students begin writing the diary posts starting tomorrow. Today was definitely "Hump Day" as we struggled as a whole getting over the hump with our talking and listening at points. When we were engaged, we did |
a really nice job.
In Writing, we learned about the four types of sentences, using the pneumonic "Did I Invite Everybody?" to help us remember declarative, imperative, interrogative and exclamatory sentences. What type of sentence does the picture of Uncle Sam show? Write your answer in the "Comments" section.
In Reading, we did a great job learning the awesome SWBST (Somebody Wanted But So Then) summarizing strategy and applying it to some of the characters we met yesterday in "Because of Mr. Terupt." We also finished the chapter on "Jessica" and will read about "Luke" and the awesome "Dollar Words" activity tomorrow. We began forming definitions of the fifth-grade theme of "Identity," with the kids coming up with great answers that I will share with them next week.
In Social Studies, we did a read aloud of an actual article from the day after 9/11, courtesy of the Chicago Sun-Times, and watched CNN Student News, during which we learned about the ceasefire of the civil war in Syria, the rise in median wages in the United States, and the construction of a controversial oil pipeline that would run through Illinois.
Let's finish the last two days of the week strong. See you tomorrow!
