In addition to being back from Thanksgiving break, we are back to the students writing the Daily Diary.
  • Today in Math class, what we all did was go over the math skill of the week, and we did some division problems. Then the last thing we did was a mini-division test on a Post-It. :-) Megan Wolynia :-)
  • Today in Reading class, we sorted and learned our new vocabulary words. We are going to take a vocabulary quiz on Wednesday. :) Adrian Velez :)
  • Today in Writing class, we did our D.O.L.s to help practice writing correct sentences. We also worked on our "Last Stop on 63rd Street" project. We worked on our "Storyboard" where we started to write the story and draw pictures. Next, we need to think about what our storyboard should look like. :-) Sonya Ujda :-)
  • Today in Social Studies class, we did a close read of an actual New York Times article from 1892 on the opening of Ellis Island. We then watched CNN Student News, learning about the death of Fidel Castro, recount efforts by the Green Party and a redesign of the wheel. :) Mr. Maynard :)

It's been a while since the last "Daily Diary" post, which I apologize for.

November is a choppy yet busy month. I think we're all looking forward to a
rejuvenating 5-day break. Students will be returning to writing the blog after Thanksgiving break.

With that said, here's a quick update on what's been going on in Reading, Social Studies and Writing.
  • In Reading class, we have been making great progress in Linda Sue Park's A Long Walk to Water, a dual narrative about an African girl named Nya's daily journey (eight hours at a time) to a pond for drinking water and Sudanese Lost Boy Salva Dut's terrifying tale of fleeing to the desert (with no family) as his village is torn apart by a civil war.
  • In Social Studies class, we wrapped up our election coverage and have gotten into our textbook, focusing on the different elements that make the United States, well, the United States. Through three lessons, we have covered the concepts of democracy, republic and free enterprise.
  • In Writing class, both classes are working on a Thanksgiving-themed project based on the inspiring picture book Last Stop on Market Street. Working with a partner, the fifth graders are developing their own picture book called Last Stop on 63rd Street. The premise is for the students to be characters in their own stories, during which they will do some service project at the end of the story and realize how appreciative they are of the many things in life. I am excited for Monday and Tuesday as the students start to create storyboards for their stories.
With all of that said, thanks for the time and consideration. Enjoy the weekend.
:-) Mr. Maynard :-)

Today was officially the first day of the second quarter.
  • Today in Mr. Maynard's Writing class, we did a worksheet on compound and complex sentences. We passed out our D.O.L. notebooks and did 2 D.O.L.s and we used our whiteboards to show our answers to the questions on the worksheet. We did an exit slip on question #10. We currently have no homework. :-) Michelle Batzaya :-)
  • Today in Reading class, we read Because of Mr. Terupt. We are almost finished with the book. In this book, it is talking about life and death and has signposts like "Again and Again" and "Memory Moments." At the end, we wrote what will happen next to Mr. Terupt (after the doctor came in following his brain surgery). :) Emily Belcik :)
  • Today in Social Studies class, we are doing a state summary for the election. We learned about which states are expected to vote for whom (Trump or Clinton). Tonight we need to write a summary about each section. :-) Giovanni Benedetti :-)
  • Today in Ms. Reodica's Writing class, we did D.O.L.s and went over compound and complex sentences. We learned how complex and compound sentences work. A compound sentence works by combining two simple sentences. For homework, we have to do a compound and complex sentence worksheet. :) Mary Baxter :)
  • Today in Math class, we did a problem about a girl who leaves her snacks in bugs with no leftovers. We learned how to put the trail mix and apples all in bugs with nothing leftover. We listed all of the possible ways of doing so. :-) Jeremiah Aparicio :-)
  • Today in Science class, we did a results sheet for the aftermath of our mold project. We also went over our homework. :) Cruz Batista :)

The Day after Halloween

  • Today in Math class, we learned about the great common factors. We did it because we are learning our common factors. :-) Fernando Castillo :-)
  • Today in Science class, we learned about mold spreading on food like apples, oranges, strawberries and string cheese. We need to do our science response #3 next. :) Michael Bielski :)
  • Today in Reading class, we read Because of Mr. Terupt. We learned why the words "It's not your fault" kept coming up. We wrote why this word kept coming up. :-) Gracie Aguilar :-)
  • Today in Social Studies class, we did a study guide. We did that because we are going to have a test. Also we watched CNN. We watched because we need to learn about the world and what's going on. Driving while using your phone is not safe. You should not do it ever. :) Adrian Velez :)
  • Today in Writing class, we learned how to do D.O.L.s and what compound and complex sentences are. We then worked on creative writing of our personal narratives. :-) Anthonie Padilla :-)
