by Mr. Maynard ([email protected]) All in all, Reading and Social Studies went quite well today. While we need to work on our talking, I was happy with the overall effort. |
In Reading, we reviewed the grade weights for Reading, Social Studies and Writing. Remember to read this paper with your parents and have them sign for Thursday. We then began our read aloud of our first novel of the school year, the entertaining "Because of Mr. Terupt." In the chapters "Peter" and "Jessica," we were introduced to not only the protagonist, the hip fifth-grade teacher named Mr. Terupt, but some of his students, including the silly Peter and the complicated Jessica. We will use these opening chapters of "Because of Mr. Terupt" to develop our fifth-grade theme of "Identity." We will continue reading the novel tomorrow and learn the awesome SWBST strategy (Somebody Wanted But So Then) for novels.
In Social Studies, we watched "CNN Student News" and learned about timely topics such as the "Brexit" (what a weird word), North Korea's testing of nuclear warheads and NASA's latest mission to space. Tomorrow we will watch the latest edition of CNN Student News while reading actual news articles from The Chicago Sun-Times and The Chicago Tribune the day after 9/11. We will use these articles to model how we will be doing non-fiction book reports throughout the school year. Next week I plan for us to get into the textbook and start learning more about U.S. History.
Tomorrow we are going to begin having one student from each class write the daily diary entry. I am excited to see how this goes.
Let's keep working hard and having fun while learning. See you tomorrow.
